(2010)

Upon first listen of Ugly Side of Love you’d think the Bristol duo known as Malachai have yet to find their musical direction. A second spin and your opinion probably won’t change too much from the first. Maybe it’s because as members Gee Ealey and Scott Hendy have pointed out, England may have given music like The Beatles and The Kinks but you can’t leave out The Specials and Asian Dub Foundation either.

Black Smoke

“I can see the outline of my feelings now,” lead vocalist Stuart Staples sings in the Tindersticks’ new video for “Black Smoke,” a riff-driven rock song in the psychedelic sixties style. This is a departure from the jazz and soul sound the band has had over two decades. With a new drummer and extra vocalist, Tindersticks seem to have found a new, more comfortable aesthetic, one that’s hazy and loose at the edges

Tour Spiel: Princeton

Inspired by the Minutemen song, Evil Monito’s “Tour Spiel” highlights the musician’s life on the road. Each week, we’ll check in with some of our favorite artists touring stateside or abroad. We’ll provide an intimate look into what it’s like to be packed in a van or waiting for a flight with the same people for hours on end. It takes a certain state of mind to survive any lengthy tour. Yet it’s the memorable experiences that make life on the road ultimately rewarding, if not interesting. This week we highlight drummer David Kitz of Princeton, who hail from Los Angeles. Last year, the band put out Cocoon of Love, a collection of dreamy numbers that bring to mind the globe-trotting sound of Swedish pop music. Here, Kitz talks about the band’s love for books and the mystery of Dekalb, Illinois.

Microphone for Youth

Piper (Iron and Wine)

A name that claims to be an authentic “Microphone for Youth” brand rooted in surf, skate, art, music and beach cultures, Hurley is a name familiar to consumers worldwide. Taking it up another level, Hurley introduces to us new projects for their clothing collaborations, gallery shows, the Hurley Art editorial brand and continues to demonstrate their commitment to cutting edge art. Hurley always struck me as a beach culture brand for surfer dudes but they seem to be expanding their fan base to a wider and more diverse audience. Check out their most recent interviews from Hurley Art, which features Adam Wallacavage, a Philly-based

Food or Entertainment?

The Bloggomist: Today’s Dish/Yesterday’s Spam
Lifestyle Opinion

The air is thick with the natural humidity of the Philippines, the sweat of bodies, and soon, of blood. Men call out bets and after a minute or two, the next two contestants enter, cradled in the arms of their owners, crowing every so often into the chaos.

Lover’s Rock

Lover’s Rock
Los Angeles, CA
02/10/10

It’s that time of year again when me and my single girlfriends get together when we realize we have to figure out what to do on that day. For those of who fly solo, there’s no better day to remind us than this day created by Hallmark cards and candy makers called Valentine’s Day. This year, you can find me and my girls at the Lover’s Rock hosted by Ladies Lotto aka LLadies. As much as I enjoy bitching with my girls about the annoying lovey dovey couples being cutesy with each other, there’s always the option of embracing this thing called love instead of hating on it.
