Jazz, funk, and soul fans along with compulsive crate-diggers began exploring the music of a continent full of countries gaining political independence and defining distinct cultural identities. Brooker traveled to East African countries like Kenya and Zaire (now Democratic Republic of the Congo) to assemble rare gems and forgotten tracks by artists like "The Nigerian James Brown" Geraldo Pino and East African funk band Air Fiesta Matata.
