Flying to LA

Composer Arthur Verocai put out a self-titled record in his native Brazil in the 1970s with little fanfare and commercial success. It wasn’t until 9th Wonder from Little Brother sampled a track from the album that DJs and hip-hop heads began to take notice. Combining jazz and funk, Verocai’s music is soulfully arranged and lushly produced. There’s a reason why Madlib chose Verocai’s self-titled record as the one he could listen to “everyday for the rest of [his] life.” That’s not an overstatement. In sound and pacing, the album is complete without a filler track on the list.

Last year, Verocai performed his record for the first time in Los Angeles at the Luckman Theatre, inviting Mamao from the Brazilian trio Azymuth to play an original track, “Flying to LA.” The performance is now available on DVD through Mochilla as part of their Timeless concert series.
