Adventurist Cartoonists
Los Angeles, CA
05/30/10

When I heard about this showing, I almost peed my pants. Family Books brings to Cinefamily a full afternoon of savory comic book history and action-packed adventure, YES! In celebration of Dan Nadel’s new comic anthology Art in Time: Unknown Comic Books Adventures, 1940-1980, Nadel will be there for full-fledged conversations with other notable cartoonists about the impact of adventure comics on popular culture as well as a book signing at the event. Firstly, Nadel, who is the leader of Picturebox (which is one of NYC’s coolest publishing imprints according to Cinefamily)will start the evening with a historic overview of adventure comics. After Nadel, “Angry Youth” and “Prison Pit” author and Cinefamily cover artist Johnny Ryan interviews Lawrence Hubbard, co-creator of the comic series “Real Deal”. If that isn’t enough to make you come out for this event, underground greats including Sharon Rudahl, John Thompson and Barbara (Willy) Mendes will be there for a panel discussion on their own work and on the topic of 1960s subversive comics. The show wraps up with “Love and Rockets”, co-creator Jaime Hernandez presenting a screening of the 1949 Joseph L. Mankiewicz classic A Letter To Three Wives, followed by a discussion with Jaime on the film, moderated by

cartoonist Sammy Harkham. This historically epic event starts at 5 P.M. It’s a must for any serious comic fan – be sure to get your tickets early because they’re sure to go fast.
