Harvey Milk Day

Hosted by Gay for Good
Vermont Square Community Garden-Los Angeles, CA
05/22/10

In celebration of California’s very first official Harvey Milk Day, 150 Gay for Good volunteers will be restoring and replanting the Vermont Square Community Garden— one of over 70 community gardens managed by the LA Community Garden Council, which works to connect people with a garden space within their own neighborhoods. To make this event a success, Gay for Good is working directly with the LA Mayor’s office, Council member Jan Perry, the LA Neighborhood Land Trust, the LA Community Garden Council, the Vermont Square Community Garden, F.A.I.R. and TreePeople. GAY FOR GOOD members will work alongside volunteers from the Los Angeles Conservation Corps who are also providing support.

Gay for Good continues to energize the LGBT community through monthly volunteer service projects with social and environmental welfare organizations around Los Angeles. Working with agencies primarily outside of the LGBT community, Gay for Good aims to build understanding and goodwill within the greater Los Angeles community through these efforts. Each month GAY FOR GOOD selects a different community organization to support through a service project. There’s no political agenda or message to their mission, just community building through volunteer service — and with 16 consecutive service projects completed, the results are becoming clear: from 3 founding members to now over 1,200 in Los Angeles, and chapters in San Francisco and Boston, with more cities to come soon. Membership continues to grow, perhaps because as one member put it, Gay for Good, “gives gay people a better outlet for our time and energies than the tired, stereotypical things that hurt the GLBT community and its collective image. I think this organization does more for the morale and PR of the community than any ‘Pride’ parade, ‘White Party’ or same-sex marriage rally ever could.”
