Ene Alantchi Alnorem (I Can’t Live Without You)

It is sometimes easy to forget that Timeless is the brainchild of two photographers and a promoter. But for those lucky enough to see the shows live there was always photographs there to remind you. For Verocai we had an amazing slide show of a recent trip to the North East of Brasil, Suite for Ma Dukes was presented complete with a tough look at Dilla’s Detroit and of course Mulatu’s show was resplendent with a slide show of Ethiopian photographs.

Casino Jack and the United States of Money

Rarely comes a documentary that unveils the secret handshakes of Capitol Hill. If this trailer is of any indication of what to expect, I’d say this is definitely a film worth seeing.

Synopsis: This portrait of Washington super lobbyist Jack Abramoff—from his early years as a gung—ho member of the GOP political machine to his final reckoning as a disgraced, imprisoned pariah—confirms the adage that truth is indeed stranger than fiction. A tale of international intrigue with Indian casinos, Russian spies, Chinese sweatshops, and a mob—style killing in Miami, this is the story of the way money corrupts our political process. Oscar—winning filmmaker Alex Gibney once again wields the tools of his trade with the skill of a master. Following the ongoing indictments of federal officials and exposing favor trading in our nation’s capital, Gibney illuminates the way our politicians’ desperate need to get elected—and the millions of dollars it costs—may be undermining the basic principles of American democracy. Infuriating, yet undeniably fun to watch, CASINO JACK is a saga of greed and corruption with a cynical villain audiences will love to hate.

The New December

Fol Chen
Asthmatic Kitty Records
(2010)

Fol Chen would like you to think they’re a mysterious band, more art than pop. These L.A.-based fans of misdirection (try visiting their website) cover their publicity tracks with fake bureaucracy and snippets of their song lyrics sprinkled everywhere. But don’t be fooled: they might be dressed for the apocalypse but The New December, their second album, is one of the more straightforward shots of pop you’ll take this year.

Op-Ed: After Copenhagen, Before the Storm

On December 19th 2009 I received a short e-mail from my brother who was on the ground at the Copenhagen Climate Conference. It was time stamped 2am and read: “Looks like no deal on COP15…at least not the one everyone was aiming for.” He was in Copenhagen filming a forthcoming documentary, already a year in the making. The project had taken him and the production crew from New York to the Congo and everywhere in between, following key players along the road leading to the largest ever conference of its kind. It was here the world would converge to agree that climate change is undeniable – but to disagree about essentially everything else.
