Mount Wittenberg Orca is called Mount Wittenberg Orca because it is about whales, it was inspired by events on Mt. Wittenberg in California, and because it elaborates on David Longstreth’s obsession with vocal harmony introduced on Dirty Projectors’ 2009 album Bitte Orca. This seven-song, twenty-one minute collection is the first original music the band has recorded since Bitte Orca, and it feels more like a small album than an EP. It is also their most staggering collaboration yet — with the Icelandic artist Björk.

Three Artists. One Song. is a collaboration featuring Bethany Cosentino of Best Coast, Rostam Batmanglij of Vampire Weekend and Kid Cudi that will be released this month and available to music fans via free download at converse.com. In addition to collaborating on the track, each of the artists also participated in the creation of a music video, which will be released later this summer, and is the inspiration behind the original album artwork for the single revealed by Converse.

Dark Sounds Series: Sonic Arboretum
Guggenheim Museum – New York, NY

Envision a Sonic Arboretum — a symphonic field of poppies, a prairie of sound, a forest floor of hornlings — all parts of one “ecosystem.” Musician Andrew Bird and artist/inventor Ian Schneller of Specimen Products have collaborated to develop the Sonic Arboretum, debuting in New York at the Guggenheim Museum’s Dark Sounds summer concert series on Thursday, August 5th. In conjunction with the Haunted: Contemporary Photography/Video/Performance exhibition currently on view at the museum through September 6th, the Sonic Arboretum will come to life in a one night only performance of Andrew Bird’s music, realized via the sonic sculptures of Ian Schneller.

The One Man Beatles

After his band The Merry-Go-Round hit the Top 40 with the Beatles-esque bubblegum classics “Live” and “You’re A Very Lovely Woman” — and his four brilliant solo albums released in rapid succession — celebrated singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Emitt Rhodes’ output halted almost entirely. Inspired by the haunted radiance of Rhodes’ work, four young Italian musicians cross the ocean in search of the answer to “where has he been for 35 years?”
