Half Full Glass of Wine

The wine is certainly half full for the Australian band, Tame Impala.  Brimming with lush, psychedelic ideas, their song “Half Full Glass of Wine” is an inspired twist from the 60′s rock n roll canon. The bonnie princes of retro-glory are Kevin Parker, Dom Simper and Jay Watson.

Stop Modern Slavery

Filmmaker Guy Jacobson attended the DC premiere of “Redlight” at American University last night. The screening of the film was followed by a Q&A session to discuss the documentary, a seven-year project that he started after visiting Cambodia in 2003.

“Redlight” shines light on victims of child human trafficking in Cambodia featuring two extraordinary women fighting the front line of the country’s redlight district located in Phnom Penh. Some have referred to Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, as “ground zero” for Southeast Asia’s sex trade

Baths – Lovely Bloodflow

Cerulean is L.A. based recording artist Baths’ debut album, whose depth, ambience and smoothness seem to come from someone older than just 21. But Will Wiesenfeld has been at music since he was 4, began recording his own tracks at 13 , and has already put out 4 albums under the guise of [Post-Foetus]. As a part of the respectable label Anticon, Baths represents a new step ahead for Wiesenfeld.

The Architect of Hip-Hop Academia

A feature on Tricia Rose
***

In a society where creativity and criticism coexist, it almost seems contradicting that there remains little space for discourse. One category that helms much debate is the state of hip hop. Its reputation is slated as a cultural phenomenon, and although its origin was conceived nearly twenty years ago, the complexities that surround its emergence still remain. Prevailing issues that incestuously relate to hip hop, some of which include racism, poverty and misogyny

African Legends Come to L.A.

Taj Mahal and Vieux Toure Share the Stage
Royce Hall (UCLA) – Santa Monica, CA
10/22/10

Taj Mahal began his career in American blues in the late 1960s. As a child learning the guitar he was steeped in the flavors, styles and traditions of Muddy Waters, Lightnin’ Hopkins, John Lee Hooker, Jimmy Reed and other titans of Delta and Chicago blues.

Over the past four decades Mahal has broadened his artistic scope to include music representing virtually every corner of the world—West Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe, India, the Hawaiian Islands and more.  Mahal’s rich and varied recording career includes nine Grammy nominations and two Grammy wins—for Señor Blues (1997) and the live Shoutin’ in Key (2000).  He continues to tour internationally, performing as many as 150 shows per year throughout the U.S., Europe, Australia, New Zealand and beyond.

“Always”

Just watch this strange bald man who stars in the video “Always” by Junip (from off their new album, Fields.)  His dance moves are on point and the angry sleeveless muscle shirt that he sports at the introduction of the air guitar seminar is classic.  Directed by Andreas Nilsson and shot at the Air Guitar World Championship in Finland, the music vid stars Alpo Aaltokoski and Hot Lixx Hulahan.

All Flowers in Time

As befits the month of Halloween, a steady slew of obscure and eerie trailers and teasers are making their way to the EM office.  So suffer me while I introduce another one of these guys: the film entitled ALL FLOWERS IN TIME.  The darkly surreal short plunges the audience into an enigmatic universe.

A malevolent signal emitted by a Dutch television program bewitches viewers and possesses young girls and boys (with insidious red eyes) making them believe that they can morph into other people and monsters.  Starring Chloë Sevigny
