Hammer Museum Celebrates 20

The Hammer Museum in Los Angeles is one of those world-class art institutions which have actively pursued the task of engaging the public with popular free events celebrating the arts and media culture. It’s hosted a wide range of events and lectures dedicated to music and video and has exhibited works by today’s both renown and underrepresented artists. By hosting performances by acts like OK Go and Michel Gondry, the museum has maintained a balancing act between high and low culture, fine art and pop.

Now in its 20th year, the Hammer will celebrate its history by opening its doors free to the public for 20 days, Nov. 26 to Dec. 18., and extending discounts (50% off on design books) through its bookstore.

‘‘It is hard to imagine that only two decades ago a parking lot and gas station occupied the space where the Hammer now stands. Over the last several years we have worked hard to make the Hammer a thriving public museum, urban gathering space, and university hub,’’ remarks Hammer Director, Ann Philbin.
