On the Bowery

A Real Hard, Look at New York in the 50′s
Nuart Theatre – Santa Monica, CA
1/21 thru 1/27/11

Hailed as the best documentary filmmaker by John Cassavetes, Lionel Rogosin captures the subtleties and bleakness of New York’s economically depressed areas. ON THE BOWERY is a foreboding slice of cinéma vérité shot in the late 50′s; its themes and poignant images still resonate today.  As economic opportunities dwindle, the pervasive malaise over America’s current workforce proves dispiriting for those with or without a job.  Major media outlets project grim statistics as our country slowly lumbers through economic recession.  The feeling of disappointment and, at times anguish, experienced by the characters in the film channel the same feelings that Americans have toward the current job market.
