Rialto Pictures present Nicolas Roeg’s Masterpiece
Nuart Theatre – Santa Monica, CA
7/8/11
Space oddity David Bowie lands on late-20th Century Earth from a drought-stricken planet, seeking water and help for what remains of his civilization. His highly advanced technology allows him to become a wealthy industrialist (a forerunner to certain Californian entrepreneurs), but American decadence—including television, booze, sex and stock issues—prove to have a much stronger gravitational pull. Bowie’s historic cinematic debut only brightened his already iconic cultural status, aided by a notable cast of very earthly creatures: Buck Henry, Candy Clark and Rip Torn.
This dazzling, visionary sci-fi allegory also further cemented director Nicolas Roeg’s (Performance, Walkabout, Don’t Look Now) stature as one of the era’s most original filmmakers. Cut by 20 minutes for its original U.S. run, this 35th anniversary release is the completely uncut version. (UK, 1976)
