A Machine Project Benefit: DMV Party / Desert Reading
Elysian – Atwater Village / Joshua Tree, CA
11/5/11 & 11/6/11
We’d like to invite you to one of our most exciting and potentially disasterous events of the year. On Saturday, November 5th from 8 – 11pm we’ll be holding our Machine Project Benefit, which will be based around that unbeloved place known as the Department of Motor Vehicles. Please join us for an evening of unbridled confusion as we transform an event space in Atwater Village into the DMV of Machine Project’s imagination.
At DMV: After Dark, you may be asking yourself: what exactly is a competitive sobriety test? What’s up with that eye chart? Is that a human vending machine? Where do I sign up to learn how to break into cars? How do I escape from this trunk?
Please note that this is not taking place at a real DMV. Do not bring your expired car registration papers or unpaid parking tickets.
When we’re not commissioning artists to create parallel universes, we like to curate poetry readings out in the desert. This weekend, on Sunday October 30th at 3pm, at coordinates N 34 4′ 24″ W 116 23′ 12″, you will find Joshua Beckman sitting on a rock in Joshua Tree reading short poems to the sagebrush, burrowing owls and possibly you. Bring sunscreen.
Meanwhile, you may have passed by our Echo Park storefront recently and heard the whine of power saws and the pounding sounds of lumber being nailed together. Look for the results of this upheaval in mid-November which will be taking the form of an installation by Nate Page called Storefront Plaza.

It’s your support from that allows Machine Project to invert the storefront, put a poet in the desert and produce a DMV themed party. If you’ve been considering either becoming a member or attending our benefit, now would be the perfect time to visit our niche membership page for the “Attending Machine’s Benefit So I Might As Well Become A Member or Vice-Versa Deal.”
