Interview with Os Mutantes
***
It was in 1966 in Sao Paulo, Brazil where visionary brothers Sergio Dias and Arnaldo Baptista teamed up with singer, Rita Lee, to form the seminal band, Os Mutantes. The results were an astounding and pleasurable sonic blend of psychedelic rock and Tropicalia.
The Brazilian music movement occurred in the early sixties, starting from a visual arts installation, but quickly branched out to include all aspects of Brazil’s rich cultural scene. Its philosophies are based on antropofagia or the cultural and musical cannibalism of all societies, generously absorbing influences from all genres and concocting a unique syncretic blend of art, music and film. →
Just watch this strange bald man who stars in the video “Always” by Junip (from off their new album, Fields.) His dance moves are on point and the angry sleeveless muscle shirt that he sports at the introduction of the air guitar seminar is classic. Directed by Andreas Nilsson and shot at the Air Guitar World Championship in Finland, the music vid stars Alpo Aaltokoski and Hot Lixx Hulahan. →

With eight to twelve inches of rain in Southern California’s forecast, now is the time to brush up on your mushroom identification skills. Mushroom hunting is one of my favorite hobbies. Gourmet mushrooms are pricey and finding a bag full of Chanterelles is liking finding delicious gold nuggets. Just make sure you have a competent mycologist properly identify them for you. There is a real art to finding mushrooms. They blend in with the leaves on the ground. They can be right in front of you, but you won’t see them. →

Catching the train the other night was insanely intense. After a languorous day of walking along the Dutch canals, we had some Thai food, drank Chimay with a puff of hash. Along the way we stared at some purplish veined, aging prostitutes in the windows and then finally made our way into Amsterdam’s Central Station. →

A Parisian beatmaker and self-proclaimed “vinyl junky,” Onra (birth name: Arnaud Bernard) left France to venture out into Vietnam. The trip was more than just a casual rediscovery of his grandparents’ homeland; he happened to be on a quest for foreign records from a bygone era. Riding on the back of a motorbike through the narrow, hectic streets of Saigon →

Check out this Vietnamese hip hop track, titled: “I Wanna Go Back” from off the album, Chinoiseries on Bo Bun Records (2008). Onra, a French Vietnamese DJ, beatmaker and world traveler visited Vietnam, the land of his grandparents, and collected around 30 vinyls. With over 10 million inhabitants residing in LA, cultural diversities coexist in a dynamic relationship that is unparalleled in most parts of the world. If you happen to drive ten miles in any one direction you can pass through Thai town, Little Ethiopia, Koreatown the list goes on and on. It’s as if we have the entire globe crammed into this vibrant sprawl. This is what I like best about my city. I effortlessly encounter life that is colored with varied cuisine and the chance to indulge in music created from all across the globe. So it was all part and parcel when Mochilla and ArtDontSleep hosted Timeless, a weekly series of epic multi-culti proportions.
This performance of the 11-year-old guitarist by the name of Sungha Jung instantly piqued my interest. Surely covering a Beatles tune is heavily played out, but this young burgeoning talent re-interprets the song with his own style and adds an entirely unique percussive dimension. None of that gimicky cuteness, nor childishness; just serious musicianship from a rather precocious child. →

Half salamander half H.R. Puff ‘n’ Stuff, the Mexican walking fish is on the verge of turning belly up and floating down the river of extinction. Known widely as the Axolotl salamander, these cute little buggers are being seriously threatened by water pollution and habitat destruction. Another big problem is that they are easy prey, basically defenseless, against the non-native species, like the Tilapia and the Asian Carp, that have been introduced to their habitat by the fishing industry. →
