GRN Apple Tree | Them Jeans

them-jeans-posterSaturday night at The Closet in Costa Mesa will be the release party for a new collaboration between GRN Apple Tree and DJ Them Jeans.  Yes, it’s true, you can be the proud owner of some Them Jeans Jeans.

Also, the first 30 people to show up will receive limited edition posters that were hand silk screened by the GRN crew.  But the fun doesn’t stop there.  Them Jeans will be on hand to autograph said posters.  Because, who wouldn’t want a DJ’s autograph?

Q&A: Drums of Death

img_4476I recently spent an evening with Colin Bailey (Drums of Death), while his tour with Peaches was stopped in LA for two nights at the Henry Fonda Theatre.  His maniacal live show and pension for face melting dance music has quickly slapped him on the map of musicians you won’t soon forget.

EM: Having grown up playing in hardcore and metal bands, how did the transition into Drums of Death take place?
When I was still pretty young I moved form Scotland down to London and that’s pretty much where the transformation started.  I started getting into the techno scene and djing and taking handfuls of drugs.  I’ve only been doing this character for a little more than a year.  It’s been a crazy ride.  The ninth gig I ever had as Drums of Death was at the Wiltern.

Where’s The Party At?

wtpa1-thumb

Technological stability has made electronic music composition stable and rigid to the point of perfection.  That’s all well and good for most people, but some out there crave something more natural, something that is beautiful because of its imperfections.  Todd Bailey has come to the aid of those in need for glitchy, 8-bit sampling with his DIY kit “Where’s the Party At?”

Q&A: Adam Freeland

adam-freelandI sat down with British DJ/Producer Adam Freeland this past week at SXSW to discuss his new album, his move to Los Angeles and the greatness of Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

EM:  Your upcoming album, Cope, is a bit of a departure from your solo works.  You also had collaborations with a lot of well known artists.  How did this all come about?
FREELAND:  Well, it’s a project I’ve been tinkering with for about 4 years, I’ve just had a lot of hiccups along the way.  I moved to Los Angeles about 2 years ago and I didn’t really know many people.  So it just sort of happened by chance

Livid’s Ohm64: Wood Paneled Music Making

64animatedAs the open source, DIY music scene brings us more amazing ways to control audio and video for live performances, it’s no surprise that bigger companies are trying to get in on the ground floor.  With the Monome and the Arduino platforms already being pushed to the creative limits, Livid has brought these same user-defined, open ended concepts to a much wider audience.

Shadow Dancer and the NanoKONTROL

Light Bar – Austin, TX
Live Review: 3/18/09

Kicking off a maddening four days of SXSW 2009, Shadow Dancer showcased a loud and aggressive DJ set to a packed house at the Boys Noize Records party at LightBar.  Taking advantage of the compact and portable nature of today’s MIDI controllers they managed to grab a hold of the tiniest of knobs and put together a fantastically complex set.

Cheech and Chong Light Up America

cheech-n-chong

This past September, after twenty some odd years, the legendary comedy team of Cheech and Chong reunited to “Light Up America” with a yearlong tour.  For many of us they have existed only on worn out VHS tapes, figures of a bygone time when everyone seemed more comfortable with the fact that everybody else was high.  Definitive proof that our parent’s generation enjoyed the pleasures of herbs just as much as we do.  Finally putting their egos and money squabbling aside, it was time for the next round of burnouts to get a glimpse of the original form of stoner comedy.

Air Jordan Vs. Raging Bulls.

air-jordan-v-5-raging-bull-pack-available-early-1

May 30th has been set as the release date for this new limited pair of Jordan’s.  What better way could there be to celebrate the struggling economy than to go out and buy a $310 pair of shoes.  A full red suede upper seems a bit much for Air Jordan’s but over the past few years they’ve been bastardizing the most recognizable shoe line ever to such an extent that it should not really surprise anyone.

From Borat to Bruno

People Sacha Baron Cohen

At this point I think we all know the genius that is Sacha Baron Cohen and his trio of characters:Ali G, Borat and Bruno.  Following the popularity of the Borat film Cohen has been hard at work making people look like fools with his lesser known character, gay fashion journalist Bruno.  Well, for anyone lucky enough to already be down in Austin for SXSW, Cohen will be showcasing 20 minutes of footage from the new film this upcoming Sunday at the Alamo Draft House.
