Kanye West is an artist in every sense of the word. He’s talented, cocky, insecure, and brilliant. This unique fusion can often times cause confusion and a wave of cynicism towards the man’s naturally born talents. After a successful third album to seal the deal of his school themed trio audio journey, it looks as if Mr. West is all grown up now as he embarks on a new terrain of experimental sounds that reminds me at least of how house music sounded like back in the early ’90s. Kanye practically sings in every track, granted his voice is filtered to resemble T-Pain; the man however has a unique vision. Kanye is in a place that is the envy of many artists, he has the ability to recreate himself over and over again and he has the loyal fan base that equally expects him to shape shift and transform. His new album, “808s & Hearbreak” is set to release late November. Of course out goes his flashy Jeremy Scott frames and his loud patent lanvin kicks and in is his subdued tieless door-to-door salesman attire capped with his fabric broken heart mended over his, well, heart. His album art was commissioned by Kaws, another artist who’s subtle commentary on consumerism and capitalism stands on an unsteady platform not yet quite defined as Kaws himself is thriving in wealth and fame from consumers of his work who appreciate his critique. But then again, I suppose this is what art is all about in the end, no?

“Incident At Loch Ness” is an oldie from Werner Herzog, but it is one of my favorites. Partly so because it deals with a subject dear to me, the ever cryptic creature the Loch Ness, which made an appearance in the last Evil Monito x Kangol project. I love how this film takes itself seriously while dealing with a ridiculous story plot with even more ridiculous characters. A movie worth seeing.

I had a chance to check out the newly designed Mondrian Los Angeles the other night. They revamped their bar area to now include more seating area. Out went the long community table and the vibe in the area is more relaxed and chill. The rooms inside are decked out to look like some Alice and Wonderland theme. flat screen television screens are inside these large pivoting mirrors. In the suites, there are see through glass showers (use your imagination). The decor of the environment is lively and carefree. Of course the Skybar still maintains its exclusivity level. The view from the top floor is very impressive.

I’ve known Rick for over three years now. He’s a friendly face that you would recognize time and time again. Rick has had his fair share working in the field of fashion. Rick is an avid photographer. Take a look at his site - http://rickrodneyphoto.blogspot.com - and take a look at his work.

His recent photo entries exudes a documentary feel of the horse race track culture. A lot of his flics remind me of pictures I’ve seen as a kid in National Geographic. I enjoy this man’s aesthetic and we will be planning to work together on a few more projects. Good chatting with you the other day Rick!

You might have noticed the slight facelift on the Evil Monito site. Much thanks to Felipe Lima who is not only a whiz in design, he specializes in filmmaking. A quick glance of faces on the diagram above shows you how radical and progressive it is that we now have a black President. Contrary to what world sentiments lie toward the United States, it is apparent that the people have spoken.

For the many years that I’ve known Mega (Huf/Black Scale), one thing I’ve come across from him is that Mega does not beat around the bush. He is a person who speaks directly from his heart and he levels with you man to man. I met Mega in San Francisco and later I would catch him occasionally in LA roaming around. Of course how this SF to LA connection would later culminate to HUF eventually opening up their first HUF brand flagship store is of no consequence. Mega currently manages the store yet he is also active working on his own brand, Black Scale which judging from its tempo, is not settling itself within the street wear market. Mega looks toward the contemporary markets as he sees Black Scale expand its collection in the following seasons. Always moving a thousand miles and getting the job done, there are many fine qualities I can take away from this man. Always good building with you sir.

Marrina is a classically trained pianist. She has been posting her piano performances of covers of various contemporary songs and adding her classical twists to them. Just goes to show the intricacies of pop music.

Barack Obama clarifies what he meant by putting “lipstick on the pig.” I would think you would all agree with his explanation. 

I got these kicks from Nike the other day. I’ve never owned a pair of Blazers so I suppose this is a start. The colors and use of fabrics on this particular Nike Sportswear ACG J Blazer is bonkers. Note the salmon colors on snakeskin and on the croc swoosh. The back of the shoe had a curious stamped triangle….a la Daft Punk anyone? Overall a funky shoe. And no I’m not planning to wear these for a Halloween costume tonight…ha!

There are few people in this world that have inspired me to get up and put forth action immediately. Dr. George Lipsitz holds his own in a very distinct category. His lectures in college lit a fire under me to go out there and do something to change the way we look at the world. The fact that Evil Monito was found in the hallways of academia is of no consequence. Dr. Lipsitz is one of the Nation’s leading voices in Ethnic Studies, he has the ability to dissect popular culture and past history like no other. A lot of the way I look at the world, the way I approach my projects were heavily influenced by Dr. Lipsitz. Recently I’ve been connecting with him to talk about some potential career paths for myself. I encourage you all to look into this man’s teachings and absorb his philosophy.

I received these shoes the other week from DC Shoes. This particular model known as the “Admiral” is a definitive new direction for DC Shoes as they build upon their “LIFE” category led by Global Mens Footwear Director, Eric Obre. The overall aesthetic is clean and proper, with a nod to high fashion. For those of you who are easing into fashion footwear, this shoe might be the one.

I received these lovely postcards from Esther Kim the other day. I’ve known Esther for many years now and it’s amazing to see how much she has grown in her art. Esther’s art can be found in the pages of NYLON and a slew of cool magazines. Back in the days, Esther used to illustrate for Evil Monito. Always inspirational to see how people take it to the next level!

For many living in Los Angeles, you cannot escape Eddie Cruz’ influence in the streetwear retail game. The man has laid down the foundation for some of the most notable and well established brands in our industry. He currently owns Union LA,Stussy LA, co-owns Supreme LA and co-owns the UNDFTD brand and stores. Eddie is soft spoken and he is attentive when you share a discussion. We’re working with Eddie on a few projects and welcome his voice and opinion. Always an inspiration and generous with his time, a pleasure to have met your acquaintance. Let’s keep building!
