Treasure Island Music Festival 2011

Treasure Island Music Festival – San Francisco, Ca
Live Review: October 15 & 16, 2011

Ahoy ahoy, the Treasure Island Music Festival this past weekend has upped the magic once again going into their fifth year with their two-day celebration. Bless their little hearts, they’ve continued with their tradition of putting all their electronica and hip-hop acts on the first day, I was thoroughly tuckered out from all the dancing as I’m sure everyone else was.

The Stepkids: A New Kind Of Funk, A New Kind Of Soul

The Stepkids
El Rey Theatre – Los Angeles, CA
9/15/11

Emerging Connecticut three-piece, The Stepkids, is an act that all of you absolutely must-see. They brought the El Rey down with so much intensity but remained subdued and dream-like in their rhythms. I, being one so far removed from the era of when funk and psychedelia were king, managed to be catapulted into the furthest reaches of the ether and onto a different planet.

Q&A: Future Islands

I can’t believe this amazing act flew under my radar until I caught them at FYF Fest. They were happy to oblige Evil Monito with an on-site Q&A, which you can check out below. It was definitely an electrifying show. The extent of frontman Samuel T. Herring’s charisma did not occur to me until the set began and he demonstrated a physically demanding repartee of movements and gyrations that drew in any cursory glance. In conjunction with Gerrit Welmer’s synth beats and samples and Will Cashion’s bass lines, they laid it down with amazing force.
