Toyo Ito and Egg Crates

Toyo Ito’s designs are fascinating and innovative. Even before the groudbreaking Sendai Mediatheque he had an impressive run of amazing buildings. The concept of a composed articulated structural façade is a recent idea executed in landmark buildings as of late: Rem Koolhaas’ Seattle Public Libray , Herzog and De Meuron’s Beijing National Stadium and Ito’s Tokyo store for luxury shoemaker TODs

Renzo Piano - California Academy of Sciences

California Academy of Sciences

I was up in the bay area last week and got a chance to see Renzo Piano’s new California Academy of Sciences building. Its fits well into Golden Gate Park and as usual the design and details of the building are very nice. Compared to our lame shopping mall like counterpart -the California Science Center its brilliant. Many of Piano’s details are recognizable from his many international projects and they are solid, but feel very restrained

Whether it’s Jennifer or Gwen or LC, give a girl a little bit of cash and a stylist and she suddenly thinks she’s the next great fashion genius. Now when I heard Mrs. Joel Madden (aka: Nicole Richie) was designing a line of jewelry named after

Q&A: Richard Haines

EM: Occupation and Position.
Haines: Owner of Richard Haines Designs

EM: What community do you closely identify with?
I love the area I live in - and I really love all of NYC. Union Square has become a crossroads for downtown - a mix of Parsons, NYU students, old time villagers, movie stars, designers and lots of families with kids . I also love downtown because it’s always been in the vanguard of free thinking, intellectuals
