The Spiders: No No Boy

Lets Go! Spider (2000)

Big Beat Records (UK Reissue)

Ever since my neighbor got bit by a Brown Recluse, I’ve begrudgingly killed every spider in sight. And although a healthy chunk of flesh had to be amputated from my neighbor’s thigh, she healed up nicely and moved far away; leaving us with our new anxiety.  Due to the impending heat, many unwanted spiders cast shadows on my bedroom walls. If the cats don’t catch them, I most certainly will. Really the only group of arachnids welcomed in my home these days are the 60’s Japanese band, the Spiders. This song, “No No Boy”, in my opinion

TV On the Radio: “Dancing Choose”

Last month’s TV on the Radio music video deserves another spin on EM for its electrifying 80’s pop-art visuals that stimulate the retinas and a dance anthem that packs more punch in their signature sound.  Even after the umpteenth view, their hit track, “Dancing Choose” off their recent release, Dear Science (on Interscope records) never ceases to impress.  Infectious and sweat-inducing dance beats compliment Tunde Adebimpe’s powerful rap vocals

The Gits Documentary

Mia Zapata’s live energy and raw emotion on the mic, had earned The Gits a coveted place in rock history as the early pioneers of Seattle’s grunge movement. It was during the fall of ‘86 when Matt Dresdner, Andy Kessler and Steve Moriarty formed the band around Mia’s fiery stage presence.  Her powerful vocals belted out the brash idealism and revolutionary ideals that resonated deeply with the youth movement

Dandy Warhol’s Breathe Easy

The Odditorium, the Dandy Warhols’ famed studio in their hometown of Portland, OR, is more than simply one band’s space. The band has always striven to build and promote a community for musicians, and in 2007, the Dandys began inviting other bands to participate in a collective project called Breathe Easy.  Artists would come in on their own time to record new ideas over tracks others had already laid down

Live Review: Jose James

Fiesta de la Merce - Catalan, Barcelona
Date: 9/22/08
***
It’s always nice to witness an artist onstage whose prolific musical output pushed him safely past that point in his career path that some like to call “making it”. Only this time around, Jose James is cruising down that path at two miles per hour, so everybody can take note as his stereo pumps out the smoothest shit produced in the industry. He arrived at the annual Fiesta de la Merce, for the weeklong party
