Can a man be born again?

The Bloggomist: The Local Boy
Culture Opinion

I’m blessed with a job that affords me the opportunity to see in-person the people we gawk at on TV.  Some I see randomly, others are consistent visitors.  It’s nothing worth name-dropping; I don’t delude myself–it’s not like they came to see me–I’m just the lucky bystander who happened to cross their path.  I chat with them, show them the collections, bring them pieces, and do my best to not look awkward while I stand by and watch them browse obliviously through the store.  It’s not much, but I still feel lucky.  Those moments are still a world more than most will ever get to experience.

In the Name of Progress

Fashion Opinion

Tonight I’m watching the first round of Olympic women’s figure skating. As these teenage girls, weighed down by pancake makeup and pressure well beyond their years, parade in front of millions in precarious footwear, I can only think how different it is from that other world cultural event going on right now: fashion week.

Lifestyle Opinion

The air is thick with the natural humidity of the Philippines, the sweat of bodies, and soon, of blood. Men call out bets and after a minute or two, the next two contestants enter, cradled in the arms of their owners, crowing every so often into the chaos.

Welcome to “The Local Boy”

Hi everyone, this is my personal introduction to my weekly column, the Local Boy.  I just wanted to give you guys a face you can connect to the name and to offer some background on myself and a small preview of what’s to come.  If you’ve been following me recently I just attended a pre-screening of The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and gave my two cents on Tiger’s situation.  I wish all of you the most amazing holidays and you can look forward to my trip to Sundance

Not Quite Out Of The Woods

The Bloggomist: The Local Boy
Sports Opinion

There are about a million questions swirling around the scandal involving Tiger Woods, his wife, and an unknown number of women scattered in a proverbial oat field that could have Wilt Chamberlain grinning from ear to ear.  And yet there really is only one question that has been confounding talk show hosts and polarizing opinionated factions that are emerging from the woodwork almost as quickly as the gossip-rag stories about new mistresses: should we care?  I just might have an answer that could possibly put all the controversy to rest.

Bloggomist: The Local Boy

I still remember the moment like it was yesterday. The date is June 8th, 2004. It’s a balmy California evening and I stand frozen outside the window of the UCLA Hilltop computer center. Behind the thin glass glows a flatscreen where the Los Angeles Lakers battle the Detroit Pistons in Game Two of the ‘04 NBA Finals.

The air is tense. No – it is electric. The count is 89-86 Detroit and with ten seconds left the Lakers inbound the ball. By now even the computer techs have dropped their projects and are all watching the screen.

Cooper Bikes

Cooper Bikes

The fixed-gear craze hit a fever pitch when Urban Outfitters decided to peddle customized track bikes to the masses, and surely there will be no small amount of hate as the trend continues to grow. Regardless, these bikes, made by the same company that brought you the Mini Cooper, are pretty sweet. Built with quality parts and cleanly designed, the Cooper Bikes are available as road bikes or fixed-gears. If “Reynolds 531 frame” and “Sturmey Archer Drivetrain” mean anything to you, check out the full technical specs after the jump.

The Process – Profile: Eddie Cruz

As you guys know, Maestro and I have been busy the last several months working on a video series called “The Process.” The idea came about from sharing stories about the small nuances and tidbits that I gain each and every time I meet people that inspire me. Most of you guys now know who Maestro is, his show, “Maestro Knows” has become an internet hit sensation. I met Maestro before all this was happening but I had a sense that this kid could shoot and he had an innate skill to frame a story. Collaborating with Maestro on this project came as

NBA Bans Gametime Twitter Use

twittershaq

Yesterday the NBA issued a memo banning players, coaches, and other team personnel from using Twitter and other social networking sites from 45 minutes before, during (including halftime), and and after games until all responsibilities (ie. post game interviews) are finished.  Some might get a good laugh out of the news, but what does this mean for the public’s favorite status updater?  Is it a sign of the times or a bad omen for a company that’s still struggling to monetize it’s traffic?
