On August 8th 2011, Ray Anderson, ‘radical industrialist’ and chairman and founder of Interface Inc. passed away without the world noticing. Barely two months later, the death of Steve Jobs became an inescapable subject of discussion. Canonized by the mass media, Jobs is referenced as the doyen of visionary leadership and Apple products as the utmost examples of purity and perfection. In truth, Jobs’ legacy represents everything that’s wrong with design, manufacturing, and the global economy. Like the soap in Fight Club, our ignorance is being sold back to us; reconstituted hyperbole elaborately packaged under the auspices of good design. →

Royce Hall – Los Angeles, CA
Live Review: 11/12/10
If there can be any case made on behalf of the enduring popularity of silent films, it’s the recent spate of musicians scoring pre-talkie films for contemporary audiences. In the past year, the Magnetic Fields’ Stephen Merritt (who scored the 1916 maritime adventure 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea) and L.A. noise band No Age (who scored the almost wordless 1988 French film The Bear) have undertaken the task of reinvigorating an old tradition. This past Friday night, Los Angeles psych-rock band Dengue Fever performed a live score to 1925′s The Lost World in front of a live audience at UCLA’s Royce Hall. →
A Profile on Daniel Woodford
***
Daniel Woodford is a visual artist whose designs encompass elements of spirituality, science and philosophy. His work is self-referential, bearing both meaning and emotion that stems from his background. Born in an impoverished and overcrowded capital of Indonesia and later adopted by an English couple, they moved as a new family to Scotland where Daniel “gained a sense of gratitude and a worldly perspective” early on. With his father as an entomologist and his mother as a ceramist, he developed concepts that connected art and psychology. Many are unaware, including Daniel’s family and friends, that he experiences deja vu quite frequently- actually too often. He explains that this odd synergy occurs by the minute. →
